  New in: Beauty

My skin hasn't been too happy with me with the latest surge of cold weather. Dry skin has never been much of a problem for me before but in the last weeks or so, my skin has been screaming at the lack of moisture.
To remedy this, I headed to the Clinique counter and was recomended the "Moisture Surge Intense" cream. I'm happy with it so far and I think my skin is very grateful for a boost!

They had a deal going on where if you purchased two Clinique items, you would receive a gift. So I picked out one of the "Chubby Sticks" in the colour super strawberry and I must say I'm very pleased. It's the perfect muted pink for everyday wear and I've been wearing it non stop since I bought it.

The gift was a mix of products including their 7 Day Scrub Cream, the Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion, the Take The Day Off makeup remover and a mascara. There was also a blush and a lipgloss but my mom took those :))

I love buying new beauty products...it feels like such a treat! :)

  A naughty purchase
I'm a firm believer in that a leather jacket is the solution to any fashion problem. With a leather jacket in my arsenal, any outfit is sure to have that slightly edgy vibe that I often strive towards (I need to compensate for looking like a 15-year old.) So, when I walked into one of my favourite local boutiques today and saw a display of various leather jackets, all 50 % off, I knew that I at least had to try some on.

Sure enough, I found a jacket that I really liked and at the discounted price, I just couldn't walk away empty handed. A black, nice quality jacket with zipper details is the beauty that I'm now parading around my house in (lame, I know) and even though I might own another leather jacket or two....he...he...I know that this one will be my new go-to. Perhaps I'll even sell the old one...we'll see ;)

My friends can testify to the fact that I have a weakness for jackets, especially when they're on sale. I just can't walk away. My mom has a shoe-weakness, I have a jacket-weakness...us in a nutshell.
The only great thing about not having grown so much in the past, oh I don't know....6 years or so, is that I can still wear so many of my old jackets and coats and I am very happy for my new addition!
 My life motto, basically.

  My Humble abode
Happy Saturday guyys! Hope you're all having a lovely day so far! I've been cleaning my room all day...perhaps not the most fun weekend activity but it needed to be done since I'm having some people over this evening. Since my room is no longer a dusty mess of clothes and shoes, I thought I would show you a little sneak of what my beloved bedroom looks like:
Top left: A wall installation of some of my favourite photographs that I've taken - great for a splash of colour! Bottom Left: My jewellery/nail polish and perfume reside upon a little cart that we spray painted gold!  | Right: my sofa with colourful pillows & my Walton Ford poster with pretty birds on it!

Left: My side table with twinkle lights and candles + a gilded mirror | Right: My bedside table with a silver&gold lamp, nail polish & lipstick decoration pieces and a vase with shells from beach vacations!

After about a year of slowly changing things around in my bedroom, I finally feel like it's near completion. What started out as a melange of furniture that didn't go together has now transformed into a cohesive design. My furniture is a mix of antiques, flea-market finds that my mother has refurbished and of course...ikea. I love the way that such different pieces can go together.
I am very fond of colour so I have been keen on incorporating it as much as possible without making it too loud. I've opted for a lot of blue and then my favourite shade of bright pink to add some brightness.

I also happen to love the combination of both gold and silver accesories. I know many people don't like mixing them, but I think it looks gorgeous. My bedside lamp is an example of this!

Having a bedroom that's girly but still very sophisticated suits me perfectly and I love all the little details that sit on top of my various tables and shelves.

My next project for the bedroom is new bookshelves. I currently have the most boring set of shelves and for a book-lover like me, having nice shelves is very important :) We'll see how I get on with that....

Hope you enjoyed seeing some details from my bedroom!

  Blush Nails Courtesy of Dior

Whereas wine reds and forest greens might be my go-to nail colours during this time of year, there is something very pleasant about a light blush-pink shade. It's natural, understated and it looks absolutely stunning paired with gold accessories!
This one is "Incognito" by Dior and I am so pleased with both the shade and the quality of the varnish. It applies smooth and even and holds up nicely for quite a few days.
Consider me impressed!

I've dreamt of long hair since I was little and despite the fact that I've only ever cut the very tips of my hair each time I go to the salon, my hair doesn't reach much further than my shoulders.
Growing out my hair has been a frustrating process and I often wonder whether its even physically possible for my hair to grow to my desired length. Hair just shouldn't be allowed to grow this slowly.
I once went an entire year without cutting anything and barely noticed a difference...

My curly hair seems to give me a disadvantage in the growing department and there's not much else I can do than continue to be patient and wait, wait, wait.

This year though, I'm going to try a bit harder because I want a visible difference (!) and below are some pointers as to how I'm going to make that happen:

 1. Vitamins & Water
Time to stock up on vitamins A, B, C & E to boost and promote hair growth.
I'm also very bad at drinking a decent amount of water everyday (ooops) so it's time I start        bettering myself for the overall well-being of my body.

 2. Product Investment
I use the cheapest shampoo and conditioner purchased from the grocery store. I think it's time to start looking into some higher quality products that will suit my hair type perfectly. My previous experiences with nicer hair products would generally make my hair look nicer in its natural form, which makes it easier for me to stay away from the blow dryer or straightening irons = less damage = longer hair.
I'm just a little lost when it comes to the myriad of hair care brands. I'm thinking Moroccan Oil or....?
I have really curly ( & bushy) hair so I need something suited for that.

 3. Trims
I'm not good at getting regular trims anymore. Ever since I took that sabbatical from the salon, I've been denying the importance of actually going and getting your sickly ends cut off every now and then...I always get told off by the hairdresser... (:
Need to remind myself to go every 2-3 months or so! Don't want to grow out my hair and then find out that I have to cut off loads because my ends were so damaged.

1. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
With no particular plans this past Saturday, I settled in the couch and decided to start a new book. I ended up picking Throne of Glass and OH MY GOD IT IS AMAZING.  I tend to love and rave about most books that I read but in this case it's like multiplied by a million. Seriously guys, if you like kick-ass female protagonists and fantasy - you will LOVE this book.
It is the first book in a series that is expected to be around six books (!!!) and the premise is basically this:
Celaena Sardothien, the country's most deadliest assassin, is serving life sentence in the slave mines until she one day is brought out by the Prince who wants her to be his champion in the competition to become the King's royal assassin. If she wins, she'll be on a path to freedom. If she loses, she'll be sent back to the mines until she dies.
It's awesome!

(I had too)

2. Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Maas
By night time I had devoured the first book so of course I had to continue onto the sequel, Crown of Midnight, and it was EVEN BETTER! I am so happy to have found such a great book series and I don't think I can wait until autumn when the third book comes out. *cries*

(& yes, I am too confused as to how I managed to finish two books ( a 450 pages each) in under 24 hours)

3. Community Season 5
One of my all time favourite shows (next to Veronica Mars and Parks & Recreation) just started airing again and it is wonderful! Season 4 was a bit rocky but now they've returned with all it's former glory. Community is hilarious guys, go watch it.

4. Frozen
Disney's latest is a worldwide hit for a reason. Yes, I might be biased because I have a weakness for Disney films (but I suspect many of us do.) Frozen is so cute and entertaining and brilliant and wonderful and I suggest you see it now! + Points for Kristen Bell

5. Reign
Reign is one of the CW's latest TV shows and it revolves around Mary Queen of Scots and her time spent in France as the crown prince's betrothed. Its perhaps not the highest quality of historical dramas but it's entertaining and they wear really cool dresses and headpieces --> Read this

6. Revenge
Revenge is also one of my favourite shows to watch and lately I've been going back to the first season and re-watching episodes because I'm a sad excuse for a human being it's great.
Emily Thorne, the main character, is bad ass and that is basically why I love the show so much! Other reasons I love Revenge: Good actors and constant plot twists.

So these are some things that I've been pre-occupying myself with this past week or two and I think that you should check them out whether you're looking for a great book to read, a funny TV-show to fall in love with or a cute animated movie that will absolutely make you smile and want to belt out the soundtrack afterwards (I mean...Let it go...anyone?)

 Cold and dreary.
 Icy blues and grey skies.
That's my city this time of year. Luckily, there are still some things that can appear pleasant in photographs.

  Sales finds #2

Sneaked into H&M earlier today and couldn't resist buying this little dress when I saw the very reduced price tag. I love lace detailing and the fact that this dress has a thick lace trim both around the neckline and around the bottom is just superb!
The blazer is from Zara and I bought it this past weekend, I like that it is less tailored than my other blazers!

I think black and navy go great together...whoever came up with the rule forbidding it was probably delusional. *wink* *wink*

P.S. Yes, I did freeze my butt off as I was taking these pictures...there were snowflakes in the air. Also, I'm very surprised my how obvious my roots are...maybe I should book an appointment to the salon...

  Wanderlust
Sources: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

Yesterday the snow started falling outside my window, indicating that we're about to have some form of proper winter after all. I check the weather forecast on my dashboard and see little clouds with snowflakes for the rest of the week and part of me rejoices because snow makes the dreary days of January a little prettier. But then as I'm clicking around on tumblr or pinterest I stumble across pictures like these and something else tugs at my heartstrings.

I reckon its a mixture of wanderlust and a form homesickness. I suddenly long for those days when you wake up and the sun is shining and the grass is wet with little dew droplets and you hear cicadas chirping in the bushes by your window - a vision that I associate with childhood, living abroad and certainly these pictures above.

To spend a day walking in a southern French village with warm cobblestone streets, vivacious market vendors and balconies overflowing with greenery. To eat lunch on a rickety wrought iron table under a white parasol. To feel sunlight on your face and your arms and catch the whiff of bakeries as you pass by.
All these things do not only remind me travelling but also home. To think that I once used to live in places like these is such a wonderful thought. Sometimes it all seems so distant, only accessible through blurry childhood memories. But when I see photographs like these, that time wedge becomes smaller and the fickle sense of deja-vu manifests itself into something almost palpable and I'm filled with longing to be there right this second.

I have to be back. Soon. I'll make sure of it. I just have to get through this grey winter first.

  Books | January 2014
In order to ensure that I follow through with my goal to read more in 2014, I'm making sure that my to-read shelf is always stocked with prospective books to pick up so that I always know what to read next.  I am now a proud owner of an iPad mini and one of the greatest things about it is that I can now read ebooks which will make it much easier for me to get a hold of books without leaving my house hehe.
Here are my next planned reads:

1. Poison Study | Maria V Snyder - Okay, I will admit I've already read this one since I made this collage...but it can signify the fact that I'm planning to read the next books in the series because I really liked the first one!

2. Legend | Marie Lu - Got to finish all the Dystopian YA's so I can leave that behind for a while.

3. Delirium | Lauren Oliver - See #2

4. Vampire Academy | Richelle Mead - The movie adaptation of this popular series hits theatres in summer and I would like to have at least read the first book before watching it.

5. Throne of Glass  | Sarah J. Maas - A book about a kick-ass female assasin - need I say more? No.

6. The Ocean At The End Of The Lane | Neil Gaiman - Read his collection of short stories Smoke and Mirrors and loved his mysterious and poetic urban fairytales and my goal is to read as many books as possible by Neil Gaiman this year.

7. The Goldfinch | Donna Tartt - I read The Secret History by Donna Tartt last summer and really loved it so I'm looking forward to diving into this great slab of a book - its 800 pages long yikes. Also, I own it in hard copy - needless to say, I'll be working my muscles holding this book ;)

8. The Night Circus | Erin Morgenstern - Bought this one in October but haven't gotten around to reading it yet, which is a shame because it's supposed to be really good - I mean a mysterious, magical circus sounds pretty awesome to me :)

9. The Lightening Thief | Rick Riordan - I've heard so many good things about the Percy Jackson books that I figured I have to at least give it a shot.

10. A Great and Terrible Beauty  | Libba Bray - Currently Reading

  Activewear
Clothes from H&M, Shoes from Nike
I love sportswear. Like, I would live in yoga pants and sports bras if that was socially acceptable. Browsing the stores today I realized that instead of setting my sights on unnecessary dresses and whatnot, I should probably look to buy some new exercise clothing.
Not only are my running shoes falling apart but my favourite Nike running tights have holes all over them from very frequent use in the last year, so it would be wise for me to update this section of my wardrobe.
H&M has a nice range of sportswear and the few items that I own from there are actually really nice so I would definatley recommend checking them out if you're also looking for some new clothes to look fierce in when you're exercising.
As for running shoes, I am pretty clueless. These above are from Nike but in the past I have been really pleased with ones from Asics so I think I might look into them too.

New workout clothes do wonders for the motivation and I absolutely believe in wearing things you feel pretty and nice in even when you work out!

  Tried the sales

I generally tend to avoid the crazy January sales because lets face it - its pretty much chaos, but today I felt I had to do something different than stay inside and watch TV-shows all day (my life pretty much...) so I popped into Zara to see if there was anything that I could score.
The whole store was pretty much on sale but I contained myself and only went home with this blazer shown above. It's navy blue and double-breasted which gives an overall very classic look and it is a piece that I can wear with anything.

I was going to show some actual photos of me wearing it but yours truly is not very photogenic today....so it will have to wait :)

Hope you're having a nice Saturday evening people!
Personally, I will be rewatching old episodes of Revenge because I'm just cool like that ;)

  The best kind of combination

You might want to add tights before going out though... (:

  Lets go vampire hunting together
Yes, still wearing them.
Thought I would take some better pictures of my beloved leather joggers from Dranella.
Here I'm wearing them with an Armani Jeans top that I cut off a few years ago and my favourite wedge sneakers from Topshop!

Added a jacket with leather detail from Coster Copenhagen and felt like I was ready to go out and kick some ***, hehe.

That's what I love about fashion though, putting a certain combination on and feeling like different characters each time! Most of the time, I like being a little edgy - it's empowering! :)

  Lets talk about books baby!
2013 was not a great reading year for me, I didn't read as much as I usually do and I spent many months in a reading funk where I just didn't pick up any books:

(THE SHAME - IT BURNS!!)

BUT, during Christmas I finally got into it again and managed to finish off some books and I will now proceed to talk about them. No spoilers, I promise!

1. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Eleanor & Park is a young-adult love story set in the late 80's that follows Eleanor, the wierd new girl who comes from a problematic home and Park, the boy who's working hard to stay in with "the popular kids" and together they experience first love and all that.
I had heard so many good things about this book and how it was supposed to ignite ALL THE FEELS and whatnot but I must say that I just didn't get to that point.
It was a good book and I read it eagerly but I did not end up with some great sense of satisfaction or "wow, this is SUCH a good book."

Eleanor & Park gets a 3.5/5 from me.
 ________________________________________________________________________________

2. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Fangirl

Yes, same author indeed! I was curious to check out more of Rowell's books after I finished Eleanor & Park, seeing as I had heard so many good things about this particular author.
Fangirl follows Cath, who writes fanfiction for a popular book series and who goes off to start her first year in college. Her twin sister no longer wants to room with Cath as she wants more individuality and Cath has to deal with being shy and having social anxiety and figuring out how to fit in on her own.  We also meet a certain boy named Levi and awesomeness sparks from there.

I LOVED this book, like TRULY loved this book.
Cath was so relatable in the way that she struggles to fit in and the way that she is awkward and not very good at making friends. Also, I think most of us recognize the obsession that one can have with a particular book series (you know what I'm talking about.)

+a magnifique love story! (hehe)

5/5 from me!
Such a good contemporary YA novel!

3.  Shatter Me & Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

http://www.alicemarvels.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/giveawayshatterunravel-300x228.png
Shatter Me & Unravel Me are book #1 & #2 in "The Juliette Chronicles" by Tahereh Mafi, a dystopian series that follows 16-year old Juliette who was born with the morbid ability of killing people with her touch. All her life she has been shunned by her parents and society and is eventually sent to awful doctors and insane asylums when she accidentally kills someone, rendering a character who believes she's a monster.
The world  has become an awful place. The weather has gone crazy, birds don't fly anymore and people are suffering.
The new government called "The Reestablishment" realize that Juliette might be able to help them gain the power that they seek.

I really like this series so far! I like the characters and I think that Juliette's ability is really intersting.
The books are written out of Juliette's perspective and she has a very poetic way of thinking which I think many people (on goodreads) found annoying. I, however, didn't mind it and I even thought that it added a lot to certain situations (although there were a few metaphors that were a bit WTF.)

I give Shatter Me 4/5 and Unravel Me 4.5/5 because OMG the end of the second book was amazing!

Can't wait for Ignite Me (book # 4) to come out in less than a month! Yayyy!

4. Choker by Elizabeth Woods

Choker

This is the most recent book that I've read. In fact, I started and finished it yesterday...it's pretty short.
Choker is about this girl Cara who has been a loner since she had to move away from her best friend Zoe a couple years ago. She's in high school now and she doesn't fit in *eye roll* and people start calling her choker after an incident in the cafeteria.
One day when she comes home from School, she finds Zoe sitting on her bed and agrees to let her hide in her bedroom as she is running away from problems at home.
Then freaky things start happening, girls disappearing and all that and Cara becomes suspicious of her mysterious best friend.

This book....this book.......ehm...I don't really know what to say,
It wasn't the best. I didn't really like any of the characters and the plot was very predictable right up until what happens at the end which left me going WTF for a good while. It was creepy at times, which I liked but overall I was disappointed.

3/5 stars from me...it was simply ok.

 ________________________________________________________________________________

So those are some books that I have been reading recently and hopefully I'll be back with more reviews soon because I plan on reading heaps of books in the proximate future!

  Good habits
Now, we all know that a new year is synonymous with new habits, or rather: attempting to create new habits. We look back upon the year that's gone by and think of ways that we can improve upon one selves.
Wanting to become healthier is perhaps the most common resolution of them all.

Now, I'm not much for resolutions, in fact, I don't have any at all but I do feel a lot more motivated to start changing things up a little.
Autumn and winter have been pretty dreary in the sense that I have been very bad at keeping up my excersising.

Ugh, Alice, excersise, really? Don't you have anything more fun to blog about?

Yes, exercise, really.

Last year, in January, I told myself that I was going to start working out like a maniac (but in a healthy way that doesn't ruin your body, duh). I've always been pretty good at staying active but I wanted to really amp the level up and see if I could build some proper muscles and just overall give myself a stronger body. So I started running 5 - 6 times a week and somehow managed to keep it up until summer, which I am so happy about. Now, my body didn't change dramatically or anything but I felt strong and healthy all the time and that is enough of a result for me anyway!

This year, I will attempt to do the same. I'm looking into what type of exercising I should do because running all the time can be damaging and I really should learn to variate. I'm just really looking forward to getting out of the winter laziness and give myself a boost.

Now - to the research station (gooooogle) to figure out the details.

Also, I need to buy new exercise shoes *sigh*
Keep it fierce guys.
